TODAY IN HISTORY--March 13, 1987: Internationally renowned Nigerian organist-composer, Fela Sowande, died of stroke in Ravenna, Ohio State. In 1965, Sowande specifically requested that one of his own organ works, Bury Me Eas or Wes (from the Sacred Idioms of the Negro), be played at his funeral. African-American organist and personal friend of Sowande, Eugene Hancock, honored this request at the memorial service that took place at St. James' Episcopal Church in New York, on May 3, 1987. Hancock also performed other works by Sowande at the service.

The Lagos State Police Commissioner, Umar Manko has asked Nigerians to disregard the confession of  alleged Boko Haram bomber, Mustapha from Adamawa State who claimed he and 4 others had been sent to bomb Prophet TB Joshua's Synagogue Church in Lagos. According to the commissioner, who spoke at the decoration of  newly-promoted officers, TV Continental, the confession has no substance, is baseless, and that the command had no fact yet to ascertain its authenticity.

A Nigerian staying illegally in Thailand for 14 months has been arrested on both immigration and drug charges after officers found crystal methamphetamines hidden in his anus. A suspiciously acting Godwin Chinedu Agbarakwe, 35, was stopped by Pattaya Tourist Police on a Third Road side street on 24 February. A cavity search of his person revealed the drug in his anus. Police said Friday that the suspect claimed he turned to selling drugs when his clothing import-export business failed. Officers said the Nigerian entered Thailand on a three-month visa on 8 September 2012. He’s been overstaying that visa since 8 December, 2012.

Hundred of passengers and crew members on a Malaysian Airline flight earlier today are feared dead as the Boeing 747 aircraft conveying them vanished off the coast of Vietnam.The flight took off from the Malaysian capital, Kualar Lumpur on its way to  Beijing, China before losing contact with air traffic control about two hours after leaving its take off point.It was carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew members.Many family members have started thronging the Malaysian airport waiting for the news of the fate of their loved ones.The plane reportedly vanished after reaching 35,000ft and 120 nautical miles off the coast of the Malaysian town of Kota Bharu, prompting fears the aircraft ‘could have crashed’. Pastor Adekunle Kayode, aged 34, has been arrested for using his finger to carry out virginity test on one of his members inside the church during a Sunday service. This incidence was said to have taken place at ‘Jesus Is the Way Evangelistic Ministry’, where Pastor Kayode is the Head Pastor. After the attack and the killing of over 40 students of the Federal Government College in Yobe State  by Suspected Boko Haram members, (in case you missed it  click here ) the Federal Government has shut five FG colleges in Yobe, Borno and Adamawa.  The school includes.....  Federal Government College, Buni Yadi in Yobe Federal Government Girls College, Munguno Federal Science and Technical College, Lassa in Borno Federal Government College, Potiskum Federal Science and Technical College, Michika, Adamawa. Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, made this known yesterday Wednesday March 5th. The schools were closed because they were considered to be located 'within the high security risk areas in the North.'. The schools will remain closed until the security situation in the states improves, while the teachers of the affected schools will be sent to new schools.

Fuji musician, Abass Akande  known to everyone as Obesere who was arrested after he was accused of raping a 29-year-old woman has said that the allegation was a set-up calculated to smear him and destroy his career.Obesere made this statement on WAZOBIA, a breakfast programme on a Lagos-based television station, MITV.Speaking in Yoruba, the Fuji musician said his accuser, Olanike Olaiya cooked up the allegation as a blackmail scheme to extort between five and ten million Naira from him.Premium Times reports:He however admitted knowing the woman, saying she was introduced to him by another female acquaintance, Bola Olowo.
